二、英语中名词化的翻译方法

据对比语言学研究, 英、汉语言在形式上存在显著差异, 主要体现为英语重“形合”而汉语重“意合”。英语有着十分鲜明的语言形态, 其语言结构紧密、句法严格, 主要靠语言本身的语法手段及词汇的屈折变化来展开表达。如:

The main objection to vegetarianism on a longterm basis is the difficulty of getting enough protein―the body―building element in food.

句子初看很长, 而实为单句, 只有一个主语 the main objection 和一个谓语动词 is,其余成分多为具体名词和抽象名词, 由介词和破折号连接, 全句呈现“核心复合扩展形态”。这种语言体式能提高表达的凝重感和客观性,因此常用于书面语篇。而汉语则是一种形态较弱的语言, 其结构相对松散, 句法灵活多变, 主要依靠语义和句内、句间逻辑关系来实现其表达, 可以说汉语是一种“形散而神不散”的语言。如例句的汉译为“我们反对长期素食是因为长期素食会使人体难以获得充足的蛋白质, 而食物中的蛋白质是健体要素”。译文中出现了多个小句,使全句呈现“链式线性延展形态”。

以上英汉形式对照恰好印证了对比语言学中的理论――英语具有名词优势于动词之倾向, 而汉语则善于使用动词结构并保留小句。Changing English一书中也曾指出英语“名词优势于动词”。而汉语作为一种最缺乏曲折形态的语言,其语法结构较严格地受“时间顺序原则”的制约,显然,以动词和其他成分组织的小句更易于体现这一原则。所以汉语具有“以动词为中心”的语法特征。根据语句翻译的等效原则,译者应力求将英语中名词化结构所传达的语义效果,用适当的“以动词为中心”的汉语形式表达出来,易于读者理解原文作者真正的语义。

因此, 虽说英汉翻译没有固定的模式可套,但毕竟这两种语言各有某些固定的表达特点,在进行英汉语转换时译者并非是简单地用汉字与英语单词作精确对应, 而是将以上特征映射到转换的实际过程中去, 从而顺利地实现该转换操作。在这样一个大的语际转换背景下, 名词化结构的处理成为了十分关键的部分, 该转换应处于“词组―小句”两个层次之间, 而转换趋势应为由英语的词组转换为汉语的小句 (汉语小句相当于一个主谓或动宾词组或是一个独立存在的句子)。以上句为例, 其主语由复杂的英语名词化结构被译为完整的汉语小句“我们反对长期素食”, 这便是名词化结构英汉形式转换的典型范例。

1直译法。在这种情况下,原文结构中成分之间的关系在译文中基本不变。例如:

2转换法。翻译时英语中的名词结构需转换成汉语相应的动词或其它形式,才能既恰当表达原文的意义,又能使译文自然流畅。例如:

(7) Although it was a short engagement, a lot of men were killed.

尽管交锋短暂,许多人还是阵亡了。

3意译法。即不能直接按照字面意思翻译,只能通过上下文来判断其确切含义,并按照汉语的表达习惯加以意译。例如:

(13) British workmen, once a byword for craftsmanship and conscientiousness, seemed to take a new pride in being slovenly and surly.

英国工人素以技术精湛、责任心强著称,今天似乎也变了：工作散漫、乖戾使气,反以为荣。

Craftsmanship意为“技术”、“工艺”,conscientiousness意为“责任心”,在此句中与后文being slovenly and surly形成鲜明对照,故分别译为“技术精湛”和“责任心强”。

(14) The business of foreign policy is to keep interests of different countries compatible. The skills needed are accommodation, adjustment and compromise.

外交的作用就是使各国的利益能保持协调。因此就需要有互相忍让、互相妥协的本领。

Accommodation和adjustment意义基本相同,意为“调解”、“和解”等,compromise意为“妥协”。它们用来指协调国与国之间的利益的方式,然而国际之间的协调自然是双边的互动,故此处译为“互相忍让”、“互相妥协”。

(15) It is the insistence, as a first consideration, upon the interdependence of the various elements in, and parts of, the United Statesa recognition of the old and permanently important manifestation of the American spirit of the pioneer.

我们首先考虑的是:坚持合众国国内的各种因素之间、合众国各个部分之间的互相依赖关系―承认体现美国拓荒精神具有传统和永远重要的价值。

Manifestation译为“表明”、“现象”等,如果字面直译,译文势必晦涩难懂。这里译为“体现……价值”,意义更明确。

三、结束语

英语名词化是英语语言使用中的普遍现象，英语民族认识和反映客观现实的方式特点及语言本身的结构特点导致了名词化现象的产生。这种语法隐喻语义多变，结构成分之间关系复杂，往往晦涩难懂，翻译时不易把握。要想达到英语名词化翻译的动态对等，必须充分理解原文，熟悉英汉两种语言，尤其要深入了解两种语种的语言特点；尽可能多的了解文体涉及的相关领域，必要时还要参阅有关资料和请教相关领域的工作者。了解名词化结构的构成及在句中应用的重要性，能够帮助译者提高译文质量。
