大学英语四级图表作文是四级考试各类作文中难点，也是整套四级试卷命题人的重点之一。其命题模式为全英文形式，符合命题人“既考写作又考理解”的考查初衷。图表作文的隐含信息量更多，对于表达的要求更高，因此也更容易出现偏题现象。为了帮助学生实现取得四级考试好成绩的目标，对于作为首道题目的作文应予以足够的重视。

认知文体学起源于上个世纪90年代，是跨语言学、文学研究和认知科学的新的文体学流派，是从语言选择和语言模式的认知效果为起点，探讨语言形式选择的认知结构和认知过程，力图为语篇及其解读的关系提供更系统、更科学的阐述。主要理论包括语篇世界理论、前景化理论、概念隐喻和整合理论、图形-背景理论等。新生的认知文体学主要以文学文本为研究对象，随着发展的成熟其研究领域也扩大到了小说和戏剧以外的各种非文学语体乃至非印刷媒介的文体。本文试图从认知文体学的图形――背景理论的视角来解读四级图表作文偏题的认知理据，以帮助考生顺利完成审题这一步骤，从而优质完成写作任务。

一、图形―背景理论

赵艳芳（2001）认为认知语言学在研究语言时主要采取三种观点：经验观（experiential view）、注意观（attentional view）、突显观（prominence view）。其中突显观认为，信息的突显程度决定语言结构中信息的取舍与安排。图形-背景理论是以突显（salience，prominence）原则为基础的认知观。例如：当我们观察周围环境中的某个物体时，通常会把这个物体作为知觉上突显的图形，把环境作为认知背景。

首先把图形-背景运用于认知语言学研究中是Talmy（2000），他认为“图形”，即注意的焦点部分，指某一认知概念或感知中突出的部分，其特别的价值是突显。“背景”则是为突出图形而起衬托作用的部分，相对于图形来讲，突显程度较低，是认知上的参照点。决定图形或者背景的因素包括移动方向、观察的方位、注意的焦点等。匡芳涛、文旭（2003）探讨了图形――背景这一认知结构在“语言空间”结构和“时间事件”结构中的现实化，认为图形――背景分离原则不仅是一种空间组织的基本认知原则，也是语言组织概念内容的一个基本认知原则。

二、案例分析

图表作文是将非汉字信息（通常用图表表示的数字或信息）转换成文字信息的一种作文，它要求考生用文字来描述非文字性的图表或对图表显示的关系作解释说明。这种作文主要测试考生从非文字材料中获取信息、分析问题和解决问题的能力。因此如何正确审题尤为重要。笔者以2013年6月四级考试的作文之一――父子谈论倒垃圾的题目为例来阐释图形――背景理论对于正确审题的指导作用。

本篇作文试题包括全英文的解题指示和一副以两个人物形象、两句英文对话和一些日用品实物组成的漫画。英文的解题指示主要是对考生写作的字数和书写的时间以及主题的确立给出了一些限定。除了具体的父子两人的人物形象之外，漫画主要内容是这对父子的对话。儿子说：“Dad.I’m a bit worried about disposing of nuclear waste.” 父亲回答道：“If you can empty the dustbin here，you can do anything.”书桌前的角落里放着一个堆满杂物的垃圾桶。漫画作者为了确保读者可以正确掌握漫画所传递的信息，还在垃圾桶上写出 “ dustbin”的字样。这些日用品杂物都是用来辅助理解父子对话的，而并非漫画所表达的主要意图。因为人物和物体相比，往往动态的人物是凸显的图形而静态的物体是衬托的背景。在考生正确认知题目中全部词汇和语法结构的前提下，把两句对话都作为审题的对象，就会发现这篇漫画的主题是说要从小事做起，不要好高骛远，与其关心世界上的大事不如先把身边的小事做好。那么接下来就要根据这一主题构思框架，写出各段的主题句，扩展段落，缀段成篇。

图形-背景理论认为：要对图表中反应的问题进行评述或者得出相应的结论，首先要看懂图表所含信息及其相互之间的关系，也就是确立谁是图形、什么是背景。当然这一过程常常是在无意识的情况下完成的。

注意力（attention）是在谈及图形与背景理论的时候必须被提及的概念。作为动态经历的阅读，是一种不断地根据图形与背景的关系来改变注意力，并能由注意力的变换而重新确定图形与背景的过程。这一过程中注意力是具有选择性和转移性的。首先，考生在拿到试卷之后，注意力可能会被作文题目中的漫画所吸引，从而使漫画作为认知图形得以突显，而英文的解题指示则弱化为背景。产生这一现象的原因是由于“鲜明的、具有移动性的”物体更容易成为图形。而这一做法可能导致对主题的遗漏甚至误判。由于漫画的简洁抽象和对话的全英文形式造成考生的失落和恐慌心理，从而给解题带来麻烦。在图表作文的辅导过程中，教师需要强调正确的审题认知顺序，不论是何种形式的图形表格，都应从上到下从左到右的认知顺序来完成审题，这种注意力的控制是完成正确审题的第一步。

因此，首先我们把英文的解题指示凸显为图形，把整份考卷视为背景。在英文的解题指示中对考生完成的文章提出了各种明晰的要求，而这些要求都必须被满足。如“ you are allowed 30 minutes”，“write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words”。这里既有时间的限制又有字数的要求，考生如果打破这些限制将会面临失分甚至是舞弊的处理。这其中最重要的信息还是对于主题的限制 “your views on the importance of doing small things before undertaking something big.” 由此可见，考生的文章是要围绕从小事做起展开的。由于一些考生的注意力优先指向了漫画，使整个认知过程发生了混乱，导致一些考生忽视了解题指示中对主题的要求，片面的看到漫画中提到清理垃圾的问题，从而把文章的主题错误的定位于环境保护和绿色出行上，使得这一组的图形――背景关系由“倒垃圾――从小事做起――背景关系”变化为“倒垃圾――合理处理垃圾――背景关系”。此外，还有部分考生被相对生僻的词汇 “disposing”和 “nuclear waste”吸引了注意力，从而把主题定义为谨慎开发和使用核能，甚至联想到日本的福岛核泄漏事件，从而使“倒垃圾――从小事做起――背景关系”变化为“担忧核废料的处理问题――正确对待和使用核能――背景关系”。产生这种偏题现象，除去考生使用背诵的模版生搬硬套以外，最主要的是在审题过程中忽视认知的理性顺序，遗漏了部分有效信息。这两种偏题现象都是信息的缺失或者部分信息的非理性放大，造成图形――背景关系的缺失和错误，最终导致审题的失败。

其次，图形为漫画的凸显，解题指示弱化为背景。在看懂解题指示之后，漫画的作用是用来审核所确定主题的正确性的。漫画由于其鲜明生动的特点，虽然简洁但却涵盖了丰富的内容。考生应在解题指示的背景中来解读漫画，摈弃无关的内容，凸显主题。根据认知的顺序或者两句对话的语义，都可以看出儿子是对话的发起者，而父亲是对话的承接者。“Dad” 这一称呼也验证了这一点，相反如果父亲的话语是以 “Son”为起点的，那么一般来说父亲就是对话的发起者了，因为称谓一般是用来引起受话人注意的。儿子说担忧核废料的处理；父亲说如果你可以把这里的垃圾倒掉，你可以做任何事。父亲的反馈看似没有回答儿子的担忧，和儿子的话不相关。实际上，父亲话语的意思是不要去担心核废料的处理了，先把我们家的垃圾处理了；只有把小事做好了，才有可能做好国家大事。这也就完成了漫画作者从“担忧核废料的处理――正确对待和使用核能――背景关系”到“倒垃圾――从小事做起――背景关系”的转变。从而呼应“解题指导――背景关系”中的同一主题。

最后，把父亲的话凸显为图形，把整个社会当做映衬背景。如果考生把父与子之间的对话仅仅看作是父亲对儿子的教育，而把主题定位为教育问题或是有效的儿童教育的方式，这种做法是把“社会教育问题”视为背景关系，把父亲对话的语义“从小事做起”升级为“如何教育孩子”。这种立意之所以不正确是因为，首先它完全抛弃了解题指示，只把注意力集中在漫画上。其次对漫画中父子的对话也理解错误，主观拔高了漫画作者所要表达的意图，把“倒垃圾――从小事做起――背景关系”任意的更改为 “父子谈话――儿童教育问题――社会教育问题”。不考虑解题指导，把漫画的主旨定义为仅仅是父亲对儿子的劝告和期望，以此为作文的主题也是片面的。正确的做法是把这一劝告放在社会的大环境之下，也就是以整个社会为背景，使得“倒垃圾――从小事做起――背景关系”得到升华，变为“从小事做起――全社会”，这才是本篇作文题目的命题人的测试意图。

总之，在大学英语四级图表作文的写作过程中，首先要克服心理障碍，消除对此类作文形式的陌生感。最重要的是认真审题，正确理解解题指导和图表，理解命题人的测试目的。本文从认知文体学的图表――背景理论的视角对于正确审题提供了一种更为科学系统的严谨的方法，希望对于四级作文的应试以及教学均有一定的辅助作用。

For instance, list your accounting accomplishments first, if you are strongest in accounting. Use action-oriented words/phrases like: "responsible for" "oversaw" "managed," etc. For example: "Responsible for file management." Avoid too much detail. The details can be covered in your interview.Once you have the text of the resume ready, work on the format. If you are using a computer (recommended), bullet each specific skill. Make sure you don"t crowd too much onto the page, as this will put off a potential employer. It is better to take information out. You want your resume to be clean, neat and professional. The top of the page should list your contact information. Do not include your social security number unless it is specifically requested in the job posting. Once you are comfortable with the text and layout of your resume, print it on good quality paper, such as 20 pound bond white paper. Fancy papers are nice, but it"s the content of your resume that employers care about.

Tips Keep the resume to one page, if possible. Two pages, max. Do not include such things as your favorite color or even hobbies, unless they relate directly to the job you are applying for. You can put "References available" at the bottom of the page. There is no need to list the specific references. A potential employer will call you for this information or ask for it at an interview.
