我国教育家陶行知先生指出“生活即教育”“教学做合一”“为生活而教育”。语言源于生活,脱离实际生活的语言是不真实的。沉闷的课堂氛围下,学生极易变得懈怠和疲惫,失去对英语知识的学习动力。唯有实现语言教学向生活的回归,方可使学生感受到英语知识的实用价值所在,从而让课堂教学更能彰显效度。为此,本文将从通过对真实事件的发掘使学生获得英语生活化学习体验、通过节日为教学素材实现生活教学情境的创设、利用多媒体创设生活化学习氛围、设计生活化作业内容这几个方面就初中英语生活化教学展开研究,以供参考。

一、通过对真实事件的发掘使学生获得英语生活化学习体验

信息时代使得传媒日益发达,各类层出不穷的新闻热点事件吸引着公众的眼球。英语教师应当善于从新闻热点事件中进行教学素材发掘,以新闻事件的形式,让学生获得全新的英语语言知识学习体验。比如,一次新闻报道了校园暴力事件,这是发生在中学校园内的恶性暴力事件。为了提高学生口语能力,鼓励学生表达自己的看法,教师组织了TalkShow环节,让学生用英语来表达自己对校园暴力事件的看法。通过交流,不仅提高了学生的口语能力,也使学生对于校园暴力事件有了更清晰的认识,并掌握了一定的防范措施。

二、通过节日为教学素材实现生活教学情境的创设

举例而言,结合学生喜好节假日的特点,英语教师可以以此为教学素材,进行教学主题设计,如教师可以遴选重要的节假日作为背景知识为学生进行讲解,从而帮助学生通过对节假日由来的了解,扩充其知识面。像除夕、护士节、教师节、劳动节、圣诞节等节日,均是可供英语教师利用的教学素材。英语教师可以在组织学生进行节假日主题知识学习之前,先行为学生在主题知识学习之前布置文献检索与搜集任务,要求班级的每个学生必须在主题知识学习前,自行通过网络检索同节假日相关的英语文化知识,并在课上由教师选出文献搜集较好的学生,为全班同学进行讲解。英语教师也可以将诸如圣诞节等节日作为英语主题活动日,要求学生按照搜集到的圣诞节仪式进行表演,从而让喜爱节日的学生乐此不疲,教师的教学活动也更为轻松。可以说,这样的教学模式是有的放矢的,将使学生在真实教学素材的引导下,英语语言应用交际能力将获得显著地提升。因此不仅使学生学会用所学语言进行交流,演练了生活中真实交际时需要的语言技能,还减轻了学生的心理压力,最大限度地发挥了他们学习的积极性。语言是生活的一部分,只有在生活中被使用,才能体现其存在的价值。而使用语言的能力也只有在大量的语言实践中,才能得到锻炼和提高。要进行语言实践就需要有良好的语言环境,那就是生活。

三、利用多媒体创设生活化学习氛围

从课上引入生活化英语教学素材的具体方式来看,英语教师可以借助PPT技术进行课件展示,也可以要求学生准备一些实物,如英文杂志、英文报刊、英文说明书等生活中寻常可见的素材。笔者在带领学生学习时态知识时,当讲解到过去进行时这一知识内容时,笔者利用课件为学生展示了美国的9.11事件的图片与视频,在看完图片与视频之后,笔者要求学生进行作答:“Whatwereyoudoingwhentheeventhappened?”把学生安排在模拟真实的情境中,给他们身临其境的感觉,让学生在完成生活任务的同时,进行语言的操练和交流,从而达到教学目的。在营造生活化学习氛围的过程中,多媒体扮演着关键的角色,教师应该积极利用多媒体,真正给学生创设生动逼真的生活化情境。

四、设计生活化作业内容

多年教学经验表明,初中生对于家庭作业尤其是英语作业是比较厌倦的,其原因一方面在于家庭作业比较繁重,另一方面在于家庭作业比较枯燥无趣。为了使学生更积极地完成作业,教师可以创新思路,改进作业布置方式,为学生布置贴近其生活经验的作业内容。如学习Unit8Fashion这一单元时,可让学生用英语设计并制作一套环保服装,并且用英语给衣服设计品牌标签,以此来推销展示自己的成品。教师还可以布置“带朋友或父母的照片来向大家介绍”这样的口语作业。在学习对话时,可通过自由组队编对话形式,利用课外时间巩固学习内容。学习慈善活动这节课时,还可以让学生从网络上查找有关捐款渠道的信息。还有就是,英语教师应当鼓励学生进行原典阅读,并将其在阅读过程中发现的美文进行摘录,教师可以遴选其中优秀的作品,在班级进行展示。也可以组织任课班级的学生编撰英文简报,并由学生自行设计版式、自行配图,并组织同年级的学生进行英文简报评比,如此将使学生为取得优胜、不落于人后而努力提升英语语言应用能力。

以上,我们对初中英语生活化教学进行了探究。依托于将生活化教学模式贯穿于英语教学活动之中,将使学生不再排斥英语语言知识的学习,激发了学生参与活动的激烈欲望,对之前的传统的、封闭的教学模式进行了改进,把学生的目光引向了生活。希望通过本文的论述,能为英语教师提供更多的教学思路。

一、在英语教学中强化文化教育的原因

正如胡文仲先生所说,“语言是文化的一种表现形式,不了解英美文化要学好英语是不可能的。反过来,越深刻细致地了解所学语言国家的历史、文化、传统、风俗习惯、生活方式乃至生活细节,就越能正确理解和准确使用这一语言”。

在外语教学中,语音和语法的错误往往能被容忍,文化错误常常比语言错误更严重。如果没有文化方面的知识,如果不了解文化方面的接受性和不可接受性,交际就可能发生障碍或失败。如:freeze这个词的基本含义是“冰冻”、“结冰”。而在一个私人拥有枪支的美国社会,一位留学生因听不懂美国人的口语Freeze(“站住”“不许动”)而被枪杀。对美国人来说,Freeze!却是人人皆知的日常用语。假如这位留学生有这点文化知识就不至于付出生命的代价。

所谓文化教学是教会学生怎样在真实的社会环境中去完成与社会环境相配的社会行为,传授的应该是关于文化知识的真实、地道的使用,而不仅仅是关于文化的知识。因此,在新课程的英语教学中,不仅要让学生掌握知识、技能,还应根据学生的年龄特点和认知能力,逐步扩展文化知识的内容和范围。如果我们能将西方文化渗透进日常的教学活动,让学生感受英语的真正魅力,就可以培养学生学习英语的浓厚兴趣,同时也会使大多数学生实现从被动学习到主动学习的转变。

二、中学英语教学跨文化意识渗透的内容

由于学生对语言知识的掌握有限,涉及面窄,谈论的话题内容多与日常生活有关,要更深入地谈话还需进一步扩大语法和词汇知识。我们进行文化导入的内容应以日常用语为主,包括称谓、介绍、寒暄、告别、祝贺及禁忌语等,体现出两种文化思维模式和表达方式的不同。如:

1. 姓名

中国人的姓氏放在名字的前面,而西方人的姓氏放在名字的后面,这是其一。其二,中国人的孩子一般跟随父亲的姓氏,这个在西方也一样,但西方的妇女结婚后,要将自己本来的姓氏改成丈夫的姓氏。这个习惯在中学的课文中没有出现,但教师应补充这一文化特点,才不会让学生造成困惑和误解。

中国人初次见面问及年龄、婚姻、收入以表示关心,而英语国家人却对此比较反感,认为这些都涉及个人隐私。比如拿年龄来说,英语国家人都希望自己在对方眼里显得精力充沛、青春永驻,对自己实际年龄秘而不宣,妇女更是如此。再如,中国人在路上碰见习惯问:Where are you going? 或What are you doing?在英语中就有刺探别人隐私、监视别人的嫌疑了,这样的问话是不受欢迎的。

3. 打招呼

中国人日常打招呼习惯于问:“你吃饭了吗?”(Have you had your dinner?) 如果你跟英语国家的人这样说,他们认为你是想请他们吃饭。英语国家人打招呼通常以天气、健康状况、交通、体育以及兴趣爱好为话题。

4. 恭维与赞扬

在英语国家,人们之间也会经常用赞美来表示友好和增进人际关系,赞美的内容主要有个人的外貌、新买的衣物、个人在某方面的出色的工作等。受到赞美的人会愉快地坦然接受,最普通的回答是“thank you”。而中国人在受到赞美时更多的是表示谦虚,比如,说自己还做得不够,还要进一步努力等等。

5. 节日

中英文化差异还显著地表现在节日方面。除共同节日如New Year’s Day以外,双方还各有自己独特的节日。中国有传统的中秋,清明,端午,和最为隆重的春节。而西方人也有他们自己的传统、重大的节日,如 Thanks Giving Day(感恩节) , Easter (复活节)和Christmas Day(圣诞节)等。这些节日都各有相应的活动,食物也独具特色。

三、文化意识导入和渗透的措施与方法

在英语教学中,文化教学应与语言教学同步、互补、循序渐进。以交际文化教学为主,熟悉中国文化,并进行中西文化的对比,培养学生的文化意识和跨文化交际能力。

1. 语言教学与文化背景知识教学同时并举、紧密结合

教师在日常教学中应把文化背景知识和教材内容有机地结合起来,有意识地把文化知识渗透到具体的词汇教学、语篇教学中去,充分挖掘教材中与文化有关的词语,讲解那些具有背景意义的词汇和交际用语,讲讲它们所包含的文化背景知识,有时还可以适当扩展其知识内容,顺便讲一些相关的外国的风俗习惯和交际常识等,以达到文化背景融入的最终目的。这样做也相应地会提高学生的学习兴趣,收到良好的教学效果。

2. 通过多种教学手段展现西方文化知识

日常用语、专有名词、成语典故、民间谚语等都能够反映出大量的文化背景知识。在缺乏真实英语社会环境的英语课堂教学中,教师应通过讲解一些有趣、浅显易懂的俗语、典故等,将文化知识融入到我们的日常教学中去。教师还应注意搜集一些英语国家的文化资料,通过播放相关的课文录像及英文歌曲和电影,使学生直接感受到用英语交流时的语言、表情、手势等,体味交流的真实性。

3. 结合教材,介绍相关的文化背景知识

在我国现阶段的英语教材中,许多文章涉及英语国家文化的方方面面,在文化内涵、思想内容上有一定的深度。比如,讲到饮食文化时,中西方不仅在吃的食物上有很大的差别,其餐具、烹饪、餐桌礼仪等都有诸多的不同。教师在讲授这些文章时,可以将有关的文化背景知识介绍给学生,并指出其文化意义。这样结合文化背景和文化意义进行语言教学,可以提高学生的语言交际能力。

4. 对比中西节日,学习背景文化

开展“中西节日大PK”活动,收集关于中西方节日的相关信息资料,图片、音乐、或影片,做成展示课件,向学生简介中西方节日的相关习俗知识,由来等等。由此学生可以了解到众多的西方节日知识,还可学到相关的词汇。比如圣诞节是基督教徒纪念耶酥(Jesus Christ)诞生的日子,了解众多相关的词汇如Christmas Eve(圣诞前夜),Santa Claus/ Father Christmas(圣诞老人),Christmas dinner(圣诞大餐),还有圣诞节吃的传统食物火鸡(turk)或烤鹅(roast goose)、布丁(puddings)以及各类小甜饼(如golden butter cookies,fruit cookies)等等。

【关键词】英语文化 资源开发 跨文化交际 能力培养

一、引言

济南市市中区小学英语教研团队全程参与了由济南市教育教学研究院小学英语教研员王亚春老师主持的山东省教育研究重点课题《小学英语文化资源开发与教学中跨文化交际能力的培养研究》,结合本区实际,确立了《基于校本的小学英语文化资源开发与跨文化交际能力的培养研究》这一子课题,历经五年的扎实研究,现已顺利结题。济南市舜耕小学、济南市七里山小学、济南市白马山小学,济南市民生大街小学,济南市永长街回民小学承担了子课题研究工作,积累了丰富的研究资料,编写了《中华传统文化双语读本》(上下两册)等成果集,辐射带动全区在小学英语文化资源开发与跨文化交际能力培养方面不断向前。

二、研究背景

《义务教育英语课程标准(2011年版)》(教育部,2012)指出:语言有丰富的文化内涵。“文化意识有利于正确地理解语言和得体地运用语言。”文化意识的培养对于提高综合语言运用能力是一个不可缺少的组成部分。.培养学生跨文化交际能力是社会发展的需求;是成功交流合作的基础;是强国富民的战略需求;是弘扬民族文化的有效途径,也是小学英语课程的培养目标之一。

自2001年起,济南市所有小学均从三至六年级开设了英语课程。在教学我们发现中,语言和文化的关系一直未得到足够的重视,教师普遍重视语言知识的传授,对文化意识和跨文化交际能力的培养不够重视。因此,一批批学生虽能考出优异的成绩,但在语言交际时却捉襟见肘,不容乐观。面对现状,我们清醒地意识到要通过研究改进教学中的弊端,提升师生文化意识和跨文化交际的能力。

三、研究目标与途径

1.研究目标。

(1)通过本课题的研究,使学生在英语学习过程中,接触和了解英语国家文化,提升对英语的理解和使用。培养学生敞开胸怀、放眼世界的跨文化交流意识。

(2)通过本课题的研究,弘扬民族文化,加深学生对本国文化的理解与认识,培养学生的民族自豪感和爱国主义精神,正确的人生观、价值观,为我国培养高素质的人才奠定基础。

(3)通过本课题的研究,使学生在学好英语语言的前提下,培养小学生理性、人本、包容、求索、发展的跨文化交流意识,提高小学生基本的用英语跨文化交际能力。

(4)通过本课题的研究,提高课题组教师在教学中渗透文化的意识和能力,并在实践中提高教科研能力。

2.研究途径。

多维度整合英语文化资源,立体化培养学生交际能力。

(1)发掘课堂英语文化,渗透跨文化交际意识。课堂是传播文化知识的主阵地,是营造文化教学环境的空间,它可以渗透在教学的各个环节中。在英语的教学中,我们归纳了以下几种培养学生跨文化意识和交际的能力的常用方法:

A.创设丰富文化情境,增强英语文化意识。我们把西方具有代表性的四个节日,即Christmas(圣诞节),Easter(复活节),Halloween(万圣节)和Thanksgiving(感恩节)带进了英语课堂。对于每一个节日的研究老师们都做了精心的准备,购买了大量的有关节日的道具,例如:圣诞树、复活节的小兔子、万圣节的面具、南瓜灯等。用这些教具布置教师,为学生营造浓厚的节日氛围。课堂教学中运用了大量的视频与图片,让学生更加直观的学习有关节日的单词与句子。我们还在课堂中设计了表演环节,例如,圣诞节课堂中互送礼物、复活节中找彩蛋、万圣节中“不给糖就捣蛋”,让学生在亲身的体验中感受节日。此外,我们还对中国传统节日进行了课堂教学研究。老师们进行了Moon Festival(中秋节)、Spring Festival(春节)、Dragon Boat Festival(端午节),Lantern Festival(元宵节)课堂教学。“有比较才有鉴别”。通过中西节日的对比,使学生感觉到本国文化与英语国家文化之间的异同,增强了文化差异的敏感性,从而加深了对本国文化的热爱。

B.适时比较文化异同,提升英语文化意识。在课堂教学中,不但要挖掘教材的文化内容输送给学生,还要适当地引入英语国家的文化,要善于捕捉中英两种文化之间的差异,让学生通过对比,来加深了解,养成得体的语言习惯。例如,在学习询问年龄的表达“How old are you?”时,通过师生对话情景,自然而然地使学生理解“It’s a secret.”这句话的含义,帮助学生正确地使用“How old are you?”。显然,这是由于中西方文化差异造成的。此时,教师就利用比较教学法培养英语文化意识,使学生对中西文化差异产生敏感。又如,在学习Birthday这一话题时,通过举办Birthday Party的任务活动,理解、感知和运用语言。当小寿星接过朋友们送上的birthday present时,抛出问题:“When will you open it, now or later?”引发学生的思考和讨论。而后播放视频,介绍西方收到礼物即当面打开的习俗,“Wow, how nice! Thank you.”在任务教学中比较文化差异,了解文化禁忌, 提升学生的文化底蕴,增强跨文化交际的意识与能力。

(2)开发英语校本课程,整合优质英语资源。在课题实验阶段,各实验校都结合校情,自主开发了英语校本课程,为学生提供了丰富的课程资源。如:永长街回民小学的Rainbow English(《七彩英语》),该课程按低、中、高年段分为词汇、歌曲、歌谣、诗歌、文化、情景剧六个方面。既是对课堂知识的巩固,也是对课外知识的延伸和拓展。再如七里山小学和白马山小学合编的《中华传统文化双语读本》(上、下册),以京剧、风筝、泥塑等15个中国经典文化元素为主题编写,每个主题分别由dialogue, passage reading, culture links三个版块组成,通过读本的编写和使用,提高了教师英语文化资源开发的能力,提升了师生英语跨文化交际意识与能力。

(3)创造多样实践机会,提升学生交际能力。“纸上得来终觉浅,绝知此事要躬行”。除了开展节日主题活动,创设节日情景,让学生感受文化的魅力以外,每周的English Club也是学生们的最爱。万圣节邀请外教一起制作面具,组织带领学生体验Trick or Treat的活动;复活节组织学生制作复活节彩蛋,带领学生一起做滚蛋、找蛋的游戏。通过各种体验式的学习学生们对西方节日的认识更加深刻了。实验校在国家英语课程的基础上,建立校园英语广播,学生们每天进行10分钟英语阅读与学习。积少成多,让英语学习成为每天的习惯。

每学期,实验校都会为学生们聘任外教进行口语训练。课下外教组织的English Corner深受学生们欢迎,学生们与外教一起聊学习、聊生活,开阔了视野,增进了了解,使学生们在频繁地口语锻炼中培养了自身跨文化交际意识。各实验校还积极发挥对外交流窗口学校优势,和新加坡、澳大利亚、韩国、美国等国家的学校建立了友好学校。英语组的老师和学生们积极参与到接待外国访问团的任务中来,老师们担任翻译工作,带领学生们为外国友人展示中国节日的课堂教学,与他们进行交流与互动,真正提高了跨文化交际的能力。一系列的交流活动使抽象的文化变得具体灵动,让学生穿越时空,身临其境,感悟文化魅力,成为有国际视野和民族精神的快乐少年。

四、实践效果

1.学生层面。

(1)提高了学生的文化素养。通过课题研究,小学生们的口语水平、文化素养普遍提高。小学生们对义务教育英语课程标准所涉及到的文化内容有了清楚地了解。新版小学英语PEP教材中涉及到20多个话题,包括个人情况、学校、家乡、家庭、职业、爱好、日常活动、饮食、疾病、问路、天气、数字、颜色、时间、服装、玩具、动植物、身体、节日等。涵盖了日常生活的方方面面,我们依据话题,研究文化,在教学中体现文化元素,使学生对民族文化更加感兴趣,对外国文化有了初步了解。

(2)提高了学生的民族自豪感。学生在学习语言的同时,进一步了解了本民族文化,增强了爱国主义精神,初步形成正确的世界观和人生观,为具备良好的品德修养和人格修养打下基础,学会了用英语介绍本民族文化,让世界了解中国的初步本领。

(3)培养了学生跨文化交际意识和能力。学生逐渐形成了对英语学习中接触的外国文化习俗感兴趣;乐于了解异国文化、习俗;能意识到语言交际中存在文化差异,提高了对中外文化差异的敏感性和鉴别能力,既传承民族文化,又尊重西方文化,初步形成跨文化交际意识和能力。

(4)提高了学生学习英语的兴趣。在一次次区县或学校组织的展示中,小学生们的英文影视金曲演唱、英语剧展示、英语诗朗诵、动漫配音、绘本故事讲述等,充满了自信、语言地道纯正。学生们在丰富多彩的节日文化教学中,不仅学习到了有关英语国家的语言知识,并且激发了学生学习英语文化的兴趣,提高了运用语言的能力。学生在各级各类英语比赛中获奖,参加全国星星火炬英语风采比赛有近百人获奖,其中有5人获得特金奖,20人获得金奖,30人获得银奖;参加全国希望英语之星比赛,有10人获得山东省金奖。学英语,懂文化,善沟通、会交流,做现代文艺少年已成为小学生的自觉行动。

2.教师层面。老师们在进行课题研究的过程中,丰富了英语文化知识,加强了自身的文化意识,促进了自身专业的提高。课题实验组的每一位老师都具备区级优质课一等奖以上的荣誉,都获得过星星火炬优秀指导教师的称号。孟娜老师获得全国优质课评比一等奖。

五、今后方向

我们的研究虽然取得了些许成绩,但是反思研究的过程还有很多地方需要改进与提高:

1.进一步引导教师找准切入点,使文化教学自然融入语言教学过程,避免生搬硬套。

2.小学英语学科不同学段之间与同学段其他学科之间相同文化主题的整合是下一步深入研究的方向。

3.跨文化交际能力培养的表现性评价指标的研制也是下一步努力的方向。
