Halloween1,000yearsago,theCeltslivingintheGreatBritainbelievedthathumanismasteredbygods.TheyalsobelievethatSamhain,thedeathgod,wouldcomebacktotheearthlyworldwiththedeadatthenightonOctober31.TheCeltsbuiltbonfiresandfiredanimalsassacrificialofferingstothedeathgod.SomeCeltsweredressedincostumesmadefromanimalheadsorfurs,whichwastheoriginofcontemporaryHalloweenmasquerade.ThenightofthedeathgodwasahorrifyingtimethatsignifiedthecomingofwinterandwasthebeginningofHalloweeneve.Today,thereligiousmeaningofHalloweenhasbeenweakened;instead,theholidayexpressesman’scherishingmemoryofHalloweenviainnovative,ever-changingmodernmasquerade.
