MadamPresident,Mr.Secretary-General,Excellencies,ladiesandgentlemen,

Istandbeforeyou,deeplytouchedandinspiredbyyourgenerouswordsofcongratulationsandencouragement.WithboundlessgratitudefortheconfidenceplacedinmebytheMemberStates,andwithanunswervingresolvetohonorthattrust,Ihumblyaccepttheappointmentasthe8thSecretary-GeneralofthisgreatOrganization,ourUnitedNations.IwishtoextendmydeepestrespectandappreciationtoalltheleadersandpeoplesoftheMemberStatesfortheirstrongsupport.

TheUNisneedednowmorethaneverbefore.TheUN’scoremissioninthepreviouscenturywastokeepcountriesfromfightingeachother.Inthenewcentury,thedefiningmandateistostrengthentheinter-statesystemsothathumanitymaybebetterservedamidstnewchallenges.Weneedcompetentandresponsiblestatestomeettheneedsof“Wethepeople”forwhomtheUNwascreated.Andtheworld’speoplewillnotbefullyservedunlesspeace,developmentandhumanrights,thethreepillarsoftheUN,areadvancedtogetherwithequalvigor.

IearnestlyhopethatyoungboysandgirlsoftodaywillgrowupknowingthattheUNisworkinghardtobuildabetterfutureforthem.AsSecretary-General,Iwillembracetheirhopesandheartheirappeals.Iamanoptimist,andIamfullofhopeaboutthefutureofourglobalOrganization.LetusworktogetherforaUNthatcandelivermoreandbetter.

联合国第8任秘书长潘基文就职演说(节选)

主席女士、秘书长先生、诸位阁下、女士们、先生们：

站在你们面前，我为你们那祝贺与鼓励的慷慨话语而深深感动，各成员国给予了我信心，我对此不尽感激，我将坚定不移地尊重这份信任，谦恭地接受这一任务，成为联合国这一伟大组织的第八任秘书长。我希望向各成员国的领导和人民致以最诚挚的敬意，并感谢他们对我的强有力的支持。

联合国比以往任何时候都显得更重要。在上一个世纪，联合国的核心任务是防止国与国之间的冲突斗争。在新世纪里，联合国最主要的任务就是在新的挑战之下，加强国际秩序以更好地服务于人类。我们需要有能力的、有责任感的国家来携手满足“我联合国人民”的需求，联合国正是为这些人群而创立的。只有当和平、发展、人权这联合国的三大支柱都能得到同样积极的推进时，我们才能充分地为世界人民服务。

我诚挚地希望今天的年轻一代能茁壮成长，并知道联合国正努力为他们创造更加美好的未来。作为秘书长，我将接纳他们的愿望，聆听他们的需要。我是一个乐观的人，我对我们这一全球组织的未来充满希望。让我们一起努力，让联合国可以作出更多更好的贡献。
